When can acupuncture needles help?

Acupuncture is based on the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of chronic pain and chronic diseases. High-quality, fine needles are inserted along the so-called meridians to stimulate the organism in a targeted manner. Some patients feel immediate relief after acupuncture, while others take days to do so. Typically, it takes about four or five acupuncture treatments a week apart before lasting improvement is felt. There are patients who notice something like a floating lightness after a treatment, and almost all of them feel very relaxed afterwards.

What is acupuncture?

In acupuncture, needles are inserted into precisely defined points for therapeutic purposes. It is one of the alternative healing methods from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which, however, has been proven in its effect by various investigations and studies and, depending on the area of application, is also covered by health insurance. The thesis of TCM is that a life energy, called Qi, flows along the meridians, which run through the entire body. This life energy is in flow in a healthy body. If injuries, illnesses or other restrictions are present, the balance is disturbed. Therefore, the energy cannot flow to optimally support the organism.

However, the use of acupuncture is intended to re-harmonize the imbalance and stimulate self-healing. According to the teachings of TCM, fine needles inserted on classical acupuncture points can exert a good effect on the body’s natural self-healing powers and allow the Qi to flow again. The stimulation via the acupuncture points allows:

the inhibition of pain sensitivity by the stimulus to specific areas of the brain
the release of endogenous substances such as endorphins and neurotransmitters for pain relief and relaxation
the release of hormones involved in tissue regeneration

The classical acupuncture points are located on guiding paths, the so-called meridians. Acupuncture is able to repair what has been disturbed, but not to restore what has been destroyed. No other alternative healing method is as well studied scientifically as needle therapy. Especially against many types of pain, its benefits are proven: In some areas, acupuncture even works better than current medications, with fewer side effects. More advanced variants based on the principle of acupuncture are acupressure, in which pressure is applied to the acupuncture points with a pen or a finger instead of using needles, and moxibustion, in which targeted heat is applied to the meridians to stimulate them.

Areas of application of acupuncture

Acupuncture is considered an alternative healing method with beneficial value especially for pain conditions and for promoting healing. It cannot, or only rarely, develop its benefits as a sole treatment, but as part of a holistic treatment it can above all reduce the patient’s perception of pain, reduce swelling (e.g. in the case of fluid retention) and influence the healing process in the case of inflammation. Acupuncture is also considered proven especially in the treatment of orthopedic diseases and complaints, for example:

rheumatic diseases
Inflammation of joints, tendons and ligaments,
Osteoarthritis
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Muscle tension
Irritation of nerve roots
for acute and chronic pain as well as
in the follow-up treatment of intervertebral disc, hip or knee surgery

Acupuncture is one of the well-tolerated treatment methods for which there are only a few contraindications. Thus, acupuncture cannot be used for some skin diseases, for sensitivity disorders or for special blood diseases with blood clotting disorders. Rare side effects include skin redness, superficial bleeding or bruising, and feelings of warmth in the treated area of the body.

Acupuncture as a supplement to orthopedic treatments in the OZMO

At the Orthopaedic Center Munich East (OZMO), we like to use acupuncture as a complementary therapy for patients with chronic complaints to relieve pain and support the healing process in inflammatory diseases. Through the targeted use of acupuncture, we can demonstrate with our experience that most of our patients experience a shortened healing time and the need for traditional medications for pain relief often decreases.

We will be happy to explain our good experience with acupuncture to you in a personal consultation as part of your examinations and treatment planning. If acupuncture is an option for you, we will suggest it after careful diagnostics. But even without our suggestion, you are welcome to contact us about the many treatment options with acupuncture to discuss together the possible effects on your health. Treatment with acupuncture is performed directly on site at the OZMO. Depending on the indication, the costs for acupuncture are covered by some health insurance companies, or alternatively billed privately as an individual health service (IGeL). For example, acupuncture for the indications chronic back pain and gonarthrosis has been included in the health insurance benefits since January 1, 2007.
