Common diseases and injuries of the elbow

Elbow arthrosis (cubital arthrosis)

When osteoarthritis affects the cartilage of the elbow joint, pain and restricted movement become apparent due to premature joint wear. If there are also adhesions in the joint, the physician speaks of arthrofibrosis. The diagnosis is mostly made by X-ray examinations, in which free joint bodies, adhesions and signs of wear of the elbow joint are made visible.

Elbow stiffness

Elbow stiffness, also called elbow contracture, is mostly a result of accidents and injuries to the elbow. As a rule, extension of the elbow is no longer possible comprehensively in elbow stiffness. The turning movement, on the other hand, is rarely affected. MRI and X-ray examinations provide diagnostic insights into the cause, which may be ossifications or the formation of scar tissue, for example, which impede the mobility of the elbow.

Golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow are typical diseases of the elbow that cause overuse due to unaccustomed movements. While tennis elbow brings pain due to inflammation of the attachment of the forearm extensor muscles, golfer’s elbow involves tendon origin inflammation on the inside of the elbow. Both variants are usually treated with conservative therapies, which include decompression of the affected areas. Only in long-lasting and recurring symptoms, surgical intervention becomes optional.

Cubital tunnel syndrome (sulcus ulnaris syndrome)

Chronic compressive stress, rheumatoid arthritis or scarring in the elbow are the most common causes of cubital tunnel syndrome, also called sulcus ulnaris syndrome. This results in nerve irritation or constriction of the nerves in the area of the elbow, which is accompanied by sensory disturbances and numbness in the hand. Sparing with a splint can relieve symptoms via immobilization. Surgical measures can be used in advanced stages to free the nerve from constricting tissue.

Panner’s disease / aseptic bone necrosis (osteochondrosis dissecans)

Also known as Panner’s disease, aseptic bone necrosis is the result of impaired blood flow to the humerus, which affects the articular surface to the radial head and can result in cartilage detachment. Depending on the extent of the elbow disease, movement restrictions, the feeling of entrapment or pain dependent on the load occur. Active children and growing adolescents are particularly affected. However, surgical measures and cartilage therapy can offer a good chance of recovery in aseptic bone necrosis.

For the diagnosis of orthopedic diseases of the elbow, the classic X-ray examination and MRI play an important role. Many injuries and complaints can already be treated by immobilizing the elbow and by manual therapies such as physiotherapy.
