What are outpatient operations?

The regular procedure of an operation is known as follows: According to the diagnosis, the patient arrives at the hospital on the day of the operation, is given a room and waits there for the procedure. After the operation, the patient is taken back to his room, where he stays for a few days during his recovery and regains his strength under the supervision of medical staff and doctors. However, some procedures today do not require long stays under medical supervision due to the increased quality standards in medicine. In addition, both the high cost of hospitalization and the long period of abstinence from the home environment are considered undesirable side effects that surgical intervention always used to entail.

Outpatient surgery reduces the procedure to the essentials. The patient comes to the clinic, the surgery center or the practice exclusively for the surgical procedure as an outpatient. Following the outpatient surgery, if necessary, a control period will remain on site. Afterwards, the patient is allowed to return home, where, however, he/she must heed the doctors’ advice and tips, and care must be provided (e.g., by family members). This leaves free capacity in the hospital for seriously ill or injured patients. The patient, on the other hand, can regenerate in a familiar environment, which is often better at home than during a stay in hospital.

For which procedures are outpatient surgeries possible?

There are a variety of procedures in orthopedics that can be implemented with outpatient surgery. Generally, this includes many surgeries that are performed via endoscopy or arthroscopy and are performed with partial or local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. Operations with general anesthesia, on the other hand, usually always require at least an overnight stay in the hospital in order to control all important vital functions through medical care even after the operation.

In order for outpatient surgery to be possible with same-day return home, it is important to ensure the patient’s stable health situation beyond the limitations of outpatient surgery. For example, the cardiovascular system must be stable during and after the procedure in order to rule out complications (e.g., intolerances regarding administered anesthetics) as best as possible after the patient returns home. Accordingly, a short stay after the outpatient surgery in a medically secured setting is necessary.

Should unexpected complications arise during or after the outpatient surgery, an outpatient surgery center or practice clinic not only ensures medical backup by accomplished physicians. However, more advanced problems may lead to transfer of the patient to a traditional hospital if needed.

If the need for outpatient surgery arises in the care of patients at OZMO, we perform it at the ISAR AOP Center, which is a specialty center for outpatient surgery and provides a high-quality environment for your treatment. The procedure will then be planned accordingly by your supervising physician and discussed with you step by step in detail in all procedural points. Subsequently, our practice team, in cooperation with the team from the ISAR AOP Center, will prepare the outpatient procedure and you, as the patient, will be discharged back home on the same day as the outpatient surgery.
