What is minimally invasive surgery?

The term “minimally invasive surgery” is used to refer to surgical techniques that are performed by means of an endoscopy. Unlike conventional or “open” surgery, the minimally invasive approach does not involve large incisions. Through small skin incisions, working trocars are used to introduce an optical system, which is connected to a screen via a camera, and special instruments (scissors, hooks, grasping forceps, ultrasound scissors, ultrasound scalpel, high-frequency current for hemostasis) into the body.

With the instruments, the surgeon can perform the operation as usual. However, he does not look directly at the treatment site, but via the monitor over the cameras. However, not only can he see the normal situation very precisely, but he can also magnify it if necessary so that he can also see details optimally.

In addition, in many cases general anesthesia is not necessary, which further reduces the stress on the organism caused by the operation. The other advantages of minimally invasive surgery compared to the conventional method for the patient are:

Difference between endoscopy and arthroscopy

In layman’s terms, endoscopy and arthroscopy are identical procedures for actively treating internal areas of the body without extensive incisions as part of minimally invasive surgery. The difference lies in the areas of application: While endoscopy with the associated medical instruments is primarily used to explore and treat body cavities, the term arthroscopy is used to refer to surgery in the area of the joints. Arthroscopy is therefore also referred to as joint endoscopy. However, the basic concept of working with the smallest of incisions and operating via the camera image is identical in endoscopy and arthroscopy.

What diseases and injuries can be treated minimally invasively?

Today, minimally invasive operations are possible in many variants and are preferably used as arthroscopy in orthopedics to avoid open surgery. The avoidance of large incisions into the tissue provides a high stress in the organism, because not only the treated area has to heal, but also the newly added wound due to the operation within the framework of open surgery. The complex construct of the joints is significantly relieved by the minimally invasive surgery and the healing process is sustainably simplified compared to conservative surgery on the opened body area.

Minimally invasive surgery is usually used to treat signs of wear and tear, the removal of free joint bodies or calcium deposits, cartilage diagnostics and cartilage surgery, and corrective treatment for muscle and tendon tears in the knee, shoulder, elbow, or ankle. Minimally invasive surgery can also be performed on the hip or in hand surgery to perform the necessary treatments on the joint with small accesses.
