What is injection therapy?

Injection therapy is the term used to describe a wide range of treatments in orthopedics and other medical fields in which drugs in the form of injections form the basis of treatment. With injection therapy, active ingredients can be delivered directly to the local area, providing fast and targeted relief of symptoms without the detour through the whole organism, as would be the case with tablets and capsules, for example.

Depending on the existing disease and symptom picture, different preparations can be used in injection therapy. These include painkillers, strong muscle relaxants to relieve cramps, or anti-inflammatory drugs such as cortisone, but also gliding aids such as hyaluronic acid for the joints.

The options in injection therapy are many. For example, injection therapy may mean that the patient comes to the office at set intervals to get an injection. In other cases, the patient is trained to self-administer injections on a regular basis, such as when continuous medication is needed. The options depend on the specific type of injection, the preparation chosen, and the intended site of action.

If injections have to be given into a larger tissue area, for example in diabetes mellitus or thrombosis prophylaxis, the patient’s own injection administration is often possible. However, if injection therapy is to be implemented with injections into the joint or bloodstream, medical supervision is a safety-giving rule to avoid the risk of infection and associated consequences that may arise without expertise.

Fields of application of injection therapy

Injection therapy can be used for various diseases and complaints. The decisive factor is the need for locally targeted action of the drugs, for example to relieve pain, induration or restricted movement. These include, for example:

A frequently used variant of injection therapy is hyaluronic acid therapy, in which missing joint fluid is supplemented by injection of hyaluronic acid into the joint. Hyaluronic acid injection therapy is considered to be a proven treatment for osteoarthritis, as the degenerative disease cannot be cured, but discomfort is reduced by enriching the synovial fluid with hyaluronic acid.

If, on the other hand, severe pain is present in the case of illnesses and injuries, such as a herniated disc, which are exacerbated by incorrect posture and incorrect strain, a locally administered painkiller can provide the appropriate support in the form of injection therapy to relieve tension and reduce chronic pain.

Especially in pain therapy, modern medicine today follows new principles. Whereas in the past pain was considered to be “unavoidable”, today we know about the healing-promoting effect of reducing the pain typical of injuries. This makes it easier to avoid incorrect and relieving postures and to prevent resulting cramps in advance. It is important that painkillers used in injection therapy are well tolerated so that side effects of anesthetics do not cause further problems.
